ARTIST STATMENT

My name is Elisa Shpanova, I am an artist from Moscow. In my work I address the concepts of fragility and the short-lived nature of things. I am interested in non-static objects and their transient physical presence.

In my work I try to catch and capture short-lived relationships and phenomena. When creating my paintings and objects, I am looking for ways to give them a tangible and definite appearance. In my paintings, fragility is conveyed through the style of the minimalist silhouette painting, in which I apply the technique of one-layer paint application with no margin for error. Similar specifics are found in working with such a delicate substance as watercolour, which, in turn, does not seek to overlap or reinterpret already painted forms. In contrast, clay is perceived as a firm and stable material, which in my ceramic works elegantly and reverently embodies and perpetuates such a fast and vivid life of flowers. Polaroid images hold a special place in my art. A one-of-a-kind, unique and short-lived moment - an attempt to capture the events.
